On Going Inside an Orthodox Church
Hesitant in apprehension
I linger
By the intimidating notices
Uncertain
In the shabby entrance.
The door swings open
And I step inside,
Catch breath in a strange recognition.......
White-washed walls
Agog with saints
And bright with steady flames
Define a space.
Not emptiness or bleak austerity,
Nor coldly splendid
But as a courtyard enclosed,
Warmed by the sun,
Where children play.
Here my too-serious spirit
Begins to laugh and sing
In His newly given freedom
