Impressions in an Orthodox Church
Amid the busy to and fro
Of holy housekeeping,
Over the golden shoulders of the deacons
Dark-eyes the saints still gaze
From windows, silver framed,
Letting in resurrection light
Upon these redeemed.
Kingdom is come
Upon the wide eyed babies,
Shuffling old men,
Young girls with carrier bags and serious devotion,
On Tradition's Amazons
Fiercely watchful
Around the flickering candles
Ebb and flow the woven harmonies
On incense patterned air, crying of exile,
Of homeland lost yet won,
Heart's journey to an ever present Promised land
Whose fruits are newly brought across its borders
By golden vestured spies. *
