Behind the Curtain of Moscow Patriarchate Ideology:
a Ukrainian Analysis of the Concept
of ‘Canonical Territory’
Many of the tensions found today in the Orthodox Church worldwide are reflected in the inability to achieve an agreed position on the role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate among the fourteen other ‘autocephalous’ Orthodox Churches. The divide is between those who believe that the Ecumenical Patriarch is not only ‘first among equals’ but has an important pastoral role in achieving Orthodox unity throughout the world, and those who believe that his traditional role has to be reassessed.....One area of particular tension is Ukraine, which has had a particularly troubled history. In the article that follows a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada presents his analysis of the position taken by the Patriarchate of Moscow with regard to the question of ‘canonical territory’. The article reflects the strong feelings that such a topic can arouse.
